Make Something Every Day

It is easy to find yourself in a creative rut. You land that dream job at the big agency, and the first few years are great. You are churning out ideas like there is no tomorrow. You work hard to develop your niche, your specialty, the one thing that you do better than everyone else. You set yourself apart from the crowd – which is a great career move – unfortunately creative minds naturally want to explore, to try different things. And now that you are the so-and-so-expert, you always get the so-and-so-work. And now you are in this rut. So, how do you get yourself out? Well, I don’t have the answers for everyone, but I know what has worked for me, and that is to make the time each day to create something just for the heck of it. This could be anything from writing a poem, or a line of music, to drawing or painting. For me, I like to collage. I love taking images and words out of context and creating something completely different. I keep folders of cut out images and random words cut out of magazines, and spend anywhere from 30-60 minutes each day sorting through them arranging and rearranging until I come to something that I feel is interesting. This has been one of the many ways I have kept those creative juices flowing since college, and I wanted to share a few older pieces, and will add to the collection soon with a few excerpts from my more recent visual journal.

Stay curious, and don’t ever stop making things!
